As I write the final section of my e-Portfolio, I reflect on the past five years spent in the MLIS program at SJSU. I am deeply grateful to my boss for encouraging me to pursue this degree. From day one in INFO 200, I developed a new appreciation for information science. At the outset, I was a “rookie” in the field, unaware of the full scope of what this degree entailed. I quickly learned that it was about so much more than helping people pick out books from the local library.
I am also thankful that this program has allowed me to merge my passion for beekeeping with my interest in supporting caregivers of individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s. These areas have helped me understand how specialized information communities form and the wealth of resources available to patrons through various channels. The flexibility to customize my curriculum enabled me to explore topics like information literacy and information technology, including networking and cybersecurity. My renewed interest in web design and coding inspired me to create my own beekeeping website and explore graphic design.
Completing this culminating experience during my final semester has been both tedious and rewarding. As I review, analyze, and reflect on the fourteen areas of competency, I’ve gained deeper insight into the library science field and identified areas where I need ongoing education and experience. It is my hope to intern, or even work part-time, at my local library to apply what I’ve learned and continue my professional development. I am eager to integrate the knowledge and skills I’ve gained into my current role as a teacher, librarian, and coach.
